We are the Sassy Sams

|
The Sassy Sams meet the first weekend of each month September through May. Our camping weekends are from Friday to Sunday morning, although many of us who are retired show up on Thursday. We currently have 20 member rigs (although our By Laws permit us to have as many as 30). We quite often have 15 or more members present at a campout. Our members live in Tampa, Spring Hill, Inverness, Ocala, Leesburg and areas in between. When we camp, we usually stay within a 75 mile radius of Homosassa Springs. We are a social, friendly group of people. We enjoy each other’s company. We like to play lawn games, cards and dominoes. We have Social Hours on Friday and Saturday afternoons. We each take a turn co-hosting a weekend campout. We often have Pot Luck suppers on Saturday night. Many folks carpool and go out to dinner at a local restaurant on Thursday or Friday night. If the women are not working on crafts for a volunteer project (in the past we’ve made quilts for premies and sick infants and holiday decorations for nursing homes, for example) they’ll often head into town and explore and shop. During the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) we have special dinners and programs and our Treasury provides the turkeys and hams. We have a number of charities we support e.g., Florida Guide Dogs for the Deaf, Ronald McDonald House, the Salvation Army Food Banks in Hernando and Citrus Counties, Toys for Tots, and the James Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa. One member knitted quite a few chemo caps for the Cancer Center at UF’s Shands Hospital in Gainesville and we are also sending care packages to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Usually about 2/3 of our members attend the Florida State Samborees and a few have attended out of state and out of region Samborees too. We’re very proud that in 2006, 2008 and again in 2009, Sassy Sams took First Place in the Theme Parade at the Fall Samboree. We were also voted Florida Chapter of the Year for 2009. Our Chapter was the first Chapter asked by the new State Director to provide entertainment at the 2009 Dunnellon Winter Samboree. The Sassy Sams are Charter members of the Florida Society of Fuzzy Puckers and as such are responsible for initiating all new members. Currently there are 197 members in the Fuzzy Puckers. We welcome you to come to a campout and take a look at us. If you’re interested in joining, we ask that you attend three campouts (voting takes place at the third campout). Feel free to give our President, Secretary or Wagonmaster a call for additional information.
